The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is a member of the World Bank Group and the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., IFC provides investment, advisory services, and asset management to promote private sector development in developing countries. Established in 1956, it finances private enterprises without government guarantees to foster economic growth and job creation. IFC has been active in African startups, investing a total of $17.8 million across four funding rounds from April 2019 to October 2021. It participated in two Other-stage rounds and two Series A rounds, targeting HR & Talent, EdTech, E-commerce & Retail, and Fintech sectors. Geographically, investments spanned Nigeria (TERAWORK), Sierra Leone (Mosabi), Egypt (MaxAB), and South Africa (Lulalend). IFC co-invested with partners including Village Capital in two rounds, alongside RMBV, Flourish Ventures, Crystal Stream Capital, Rise Capital, BECO Capital, and 4DX Ventures.
