Paystack Index is a new early-access checkout that lets AI agents like ChatGPT complete airtime, transfers, and food orders for users in Nigeria.
Paystack Index is Paystack’s new experiment in “agentic commerce”, which means software agents can take actions for you, not just answer questions.
With Paystack Index, a user can ask a supported AI agent to complete a transaction. The system interprets the request, finds the right merchant or service provider, and then runs the payment using Paystack infrastructure.
At launch, Paystack says Paystack Index works with AI clients including ChatGPT, Claude, and OpenClaw. Supported tasks include buying airtime and mobile data, funding wallets, sending money through Zap by Paystack, and ordering food through Chowdeck.
The product was developed with support from TSG Labs. It is also the first public product to come out of TSG Labs since Paystack announced The Stack Group holding structure in January 2026.
Paystack’s CEO Shola Akinlade framed the shift as users moving away from browsing and toward agent-led discovery and checkout. For now, Paystack Index is not aimed at complex purchases. The focus is routine payments people already repeat often.
If Paystack Index works, it could become a new distribution layer for payments in Africa. Instead of clicking through apps and web pages, people could pay inside AI chat interfaces.
For merchants, the big question is whether agent checkout can reduce checkout drop-off and make repeat purchases faster. For Paystack, it is a bet that its payment gateway and transfer rails can stay central even as interfaces change.
It also raises new trust and security questions. When an AI agent is allowed to spend on your behalf, users will want clear controls, confirmations, limits, and dispute handling.
