Paystack launches Paystack Index, an experimental AI-powered checkout that lets Nigerians pay supported merchants via AI agents like ChatGPT and Claude.
Paystack is testing a new product called Paystack Index. Paystack Index is an AI-powered checkout, meaning it lets a software โagentโ handle the steps of paying for something, like a helpful assistant that can click through checkout on your behalf.
With Paystack Index, Nigerian consumers can check out at supported Paystack merchants through supported AI clients, including Claude, ChatGPT, and OpenClaw. Paystack says the product is built on its existing payment rails and tools, including Paystack Checkout and Zap by Paystack. It also has product support from TSG Labs, a venture studio within The Stack Group.
Paystack is positioning Paystack Index as a way to keep payments inside Paystackโs infrastructure, even as more consumer activity shifts into AI chat interfaces. The company said early access is launching first with Zap users in Nigeria.
The timing follows growing generative AI use in Nigeria. A Google and Ipsos survey cited in the report found that 88% of Nigerians surveyed said they used generative AI in the last year, and 62% used it for everyday tasks.
Checkout is one of the most important points in online payments, and also one of the easiest places to lose a customer. If AI agents become a common interface for shopping and task completion, payments companies will want those agents to complete transactions safely, with clear user consent.
For merchants, Paystack Index could reduce friction for customers who prefer to buy inside AI tools, while still routing payments through Paystackโs gateway. For Paystack, it is also a defensive move, it keeps Paystack relevant if consumer journeys move away from traditional apps and web pages and into AI-assisted flows.
It is still an experiment. The next questions will be how Paystack handles authentication, refunds, fraud checks, and disputes when an AI agent is the one โclickingโ pay.
