The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is a non-profit, impact-first investment fund headquartered in London with offices in Washington, D.C., Nairobi, and Singapore. Launched in 2014, GIF deploys flexible capital including grants, equity, and debt to support early-stage social innovations with proven potential to improve lives for underserved populations, particularly those living on less than $5 per day. The fund prioritizes scalable solutions in developing regions and provides strategic post-investment support to accelerate growth and impact. GIF has demonstrated activity in East Africa, investing in seed and convertible note stages from April 2016 to April 2017. Its geographic focus included Kenya and Uganda, with investments in energy and utilities (two rounds) and travel and mobility (one round). Notable investments were in Paygoenergy, a pay-as-you-go LPG metering solution in Kenya, and SafeBoda, a ride-booking and delivery service in Uganda. GIF often co-invested with partners such as Novastar Ventures, E3 Capital, and Village Capital across multiple rounds, supporting innovative enterprises addressing local challenges.
