GTCO says GTBank customers can pay with Google Pay via Google Wallet, and Squad merchants on HabariPay can accept Google Pay at checkout.
Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) says two of its subsidiaries are live with Google Pay as it launches in Nigeria. GTBank customers can add debit cards to Google Wallet and pay with Google Pay online.
GTCO said customers of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited can add their GTBank debit cards to Google Wallet once, then choose Google Pay at checkout. This means they can confirm payments without typing a card number, expiry date, or CVV again.
GTCO said Google Pay replaces the card number with a secure digital token. A token is a substitute code, so the merchant does not receive the customer’s actual card details.
GTCO also said merchants that use Squad can now offer “Pay with Google Pay” at the top of the Squad checkout. It sits alongside card, bank transfer, USSD, bank payments, and Squad’s buy now pay later options.
For Squad merchants, GTCO said Google Pay is switched on by default for every business, and a merchant can choose to turn it off. GTCO said merchants set up for international payments can accept Google Pay from customers anywhere in the world.
GTCO framed this as being present on both ends of the same transaction, serving both the person paying and the business being paid.
For merchants, GTCO said fewer checkout fields can mean fewer points where a customer abandons a purchase. GTCO added that accepting Google Pay from customers outside Nigeria could open Nigerian businesses to buyers abroad, including the diaspora.
