Details
Press accounts of how beXel began do not line up. Disrupt Africa, in April 2020, says beXel was formed in 2016 and calls Ayman the startup's founder and CEO. Wamda, in December 2021, says the company was founded in early 2019 by Ayman, Ahmed Hussein and Mahmoud Latif, and calls Ayman co-founder and CEO.
Disrupt Africa says Ayman called inspection an underserved market. Ayman said the certificates involved must be renewed every six months. The article adds that beXel earns recurring revenue from its subscription-based software as a service product. At the time of that April 2020 profile, the article says beXel was self-funded, apart from some funding secured through the Flat6Labs accelerator program in Cairo.
Disrupt Africa's April 2020 profile gives a snapshot of the company. The startup had 15 full-time employees and more than 10 clients, in markets such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Nigeria. These numbers describe the company as of that profile, not later. The article quotes Ayman saying Flat6Labs has moved beXel to another level and helped it get more exposure to a different world of investors, mentors and more. The article says the accelerator helped beXel enhance product features and expand into new markets.
Wamda, on 1 December 2021, reported that beXel raised a six-figure (USD) round led by JH Investments. Follow-on funding came from Flat6Labs, UI Investments and Saudi angel investors. Wamda says beXel serves companies in 14 countries. A company press-release section on the same page describes beXel as widely used by international players such as TUV Rheinland, TUV SUD and Applus Velosi. Ayman is quoted saying beXel is well-placed to scale to Saudi Arabia while expanding the on-ground team.
