Details
A 2023 We Are Tech Africa profile says Ameni holds a degree in biomedical engineering and biotherapy and left a job at Sanofi-Pasteur to focus on fashion and on building a community of women interested in fashion. Kapitalis, in 2019, says Ameni graduated from Université Paris-Descartes. The profile says Dabchy was founded in 2016 by Ameni with Ghazi Ketata and Oussema Mahjoub.
The 2023 We Are Tech Africa profile describes Dabchy, which Ameni co-founded, as an online platform for buying and selling clothing, inspired by the French platform Vinted. It says Dabchy offers new and secondhand clothing at affordable prices, earns revenue from commissions on transactions, and provides secure delivery and payment services. Wamda, in September 2019, called Dabchy a Tunis-based peer-to-peer fashion marketplace and said it started as a Facebook Group.
The 2023 profile says Ameni was selected for TechWomen in 2018, and that Dabchy was recognized that year as one of the 100 best in Africa at the Africa Forum. It says Look Forward, a French incubator specializing in fashion technology, selected Dabchy in 2019 as its first Arab and African company. Kapitalis reported in March 2019 that Ameni was nominated for the Forbes Middle East 30 Under 30 list; the 2023 profile says Ameni was named to it. Wamda reported on 23 September 2019 that Dabchy raised $300,000 in seed funding led by 500 Startups.
Sources differ on Egypt. Kapitalis, in March 2019, said Ameni had expanded the project from Tunisia to Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. Wamda, in September 2019, placed Dabchy's 400,000-plus users in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria and said part of the seed money would go toward expanding to Egypt by the end of that year. The September 2023 profile says Dabchy expanded into Egypt in August 2023. It also says Dabchy is present in Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt and has more than one million users in the MENA region.
In a December 2020 Managers interview, Ameni says Dabchy moved quickly to remote work and stopped all marketing spending early, and that Ameni insisted on no layoffs. Ameni says platform activity hit records in May, with 45,000 items added in 30 days, and that the quieter period was used to test a new version 3.0 of the app. Ameni says the team had wanted to introduce online card payment for two years, and it was only done during the crisis.
