PremiumTrust Bank has opened a regional office in Owerri, its first branch in a South-East state capital, bringing its network to 32 in four years.
PremiumTrust Bank has commissioned a regional office in Owerri, a commercial hub in Nigeria’s South-East. The move expands PremiumTrust Bank’s physical footprint, even as more customers use mobile apps and USSD, which is a short code used on any phone for basic banking transactions.
In the announcement, the lender described the Owerri location as its 32nd branch since launch, and its first in a South-East state capital. The bank also said it hired more than 80% of the office workforce from within Imo State.
Imo State governor Hope Uzodimma attended the opening and framed it as a sign of growing investor interest in the state. The bank positioned the new office as part of a wider push to serve businesses and retail customers in the region, including SMEs, which are small and medium-sized businesses.
Bank branch expansion still matters in Nigeria, especially outside Lagos and Abuja, where cash handling, account opening, and business banking services often depend on physical locations. For SMEs, a nearby branch can shorten the time it takes to resolve payment disputes, access advisory services, and manage deposits.
Local hiring is also a signal worth tracking. If banks recruit and train staff in-market, it can reduce operating friction and build customer trust. It can also increase formal employment in the state.
For founders and operators, the bigger takeaway is distribution. As more financial services move into apps, agent networks, and POS terminals, traditional banks are still investing in branches to win deposits and relationships in new regions. Owerri is now one more battleground for customer acquisition in the South-East.
