PaperTrail now lets teams edit Microsoft Word contracts inside its platform using WOPI, keeping version history, comments, and approvals in one place.
PaperTrail has added Microsoft Word editing inside its contract management workflow. The update uses WOPI so drafting, comments, and approvals stay in one controlled system.
PaperTrail announced on 14 October 2026 that users can open and edit Microsoft Word files directly inside its contract platform.
The integration is built on WOPI, short for Web Open Platform Interface. WOPI is a standard that lets a system connect to Office apps so people can edit Word documents in place, rather than downloading a file and re-uploading it.
For legal and procurement teams, the pitch is simple. Users keep working in Word, but the contract “lives” inside PaperTrail. That means tracked changes, comments, draft versions, and approvals are captured in the same governed environment.
PaperTrail also frames the update around year-end contract pressure in South Africa. October is often when companies rush to close supplier agreements, renewals, and service contracts before December slowdowns.
Contract work often breaks down in the handoffs. Teams download a Word document, email versions around, forget to check files back in, or sign an older draft by mistake.
By keeping Word editing inside the contract workflow, PaperTrail is trying to reduce version confusion and manual admin. It also makes it easier for multiple people to work on the same agreement at once, for example legal reviewers, business owners, and admins preparing signature.
PaperTrail says its workflow is structured around three roles, initiator, reviewer, and signatory. It also supports templates for standard clauses and allows external counterparties to take part in the negotiation inside the same controlled process.
For organisations moving from shared drives and email attachments to contract management software, features like in-platform Word editing can be a practical adoption lever. It removes the need to learn a new editor while still improving audit trails, document history, and process control.
