Johannesburg-based enterprise software provider Paper Trail has announced a stronger focus on renewal and expiry tracking inside its contract management software. The update is aimed at helping organisations monitor contract lifecycles from one place, including renewal windows, amendments, and end dates.

On Liners, the product is listed as PaperTrail. It positions the feature as a way to reduce common operational risk, contracts that renew automatically on poor terms, or contracts that lapse without a plan in place.

The company says its platform covers the full contract lifecycle. That includes initiation, review, collaboration, approval, signing, renewals, addendums, access control, and reporting. A “secure repository” in this context means contracts live in a controlled system, not in email threads or personal cloud drives.

Paper Trail also highlights structured roles in the workflow, initiator, reviewer, and signatory. These map to stages in how a contract moves from draft to approval and signature. The company says teams can start from templates to speed up routine agreements and reduce the risk of key clauses being removed.

For editing, the platform uses WOPI (Web Application Open Platform Interface). This is a standard that lets users open and edit documents like Microsoft Word files inside another system, without downloading and re-uploading versions. Paper Trail says this makes it easier for internal staff and external parties to collaborate on one shared document and reduce version confusion.

Why It Matters

Contract renewal tracking sounds basic, but it is a real cost centre for procurement, legal, and finance teams. When renewals and expiries are not visible, organisations default to last-minute firefighting.

A central contract system with reminders, indexing, and reporting can also improve audit readiness. It makes it easier to answer portfolio-wide questions such as which contracts are active, under review, or close to expiry, without opening files one by one.
