MTN Nigeria says a data usage transparency portal will go live by end of June 2026, helping customers track data consumption and address depletion complaints.
MTN Nigeria says it will launch a data usage transparency portal before the end of June to address complaints about fast data depletion. The company shared the update at its “Data on Trial” event in Lagos.
According to MTN, the portal will be integrated into its self-service platforms and mobile app, so customers can monitor usage patterns and understand what is consuming their bundles. Data depletion complaints often come from users who feel their plans finish too quickly, especially on home routers.
MTN also said it will open its data billing and network operations to public scrutiny. This means customers and other stakeholders can examine how data is measured and charged on the network. MTN said the engagement will be streamed live, so people across the country can participate and ask questions.
Company executives pushed back on the idea that telecom operators deduct data arbitrarily. MTN said data usage rises when people stream video, browse websites, download files, or when apps run in the background. It advised customers to manage consumption by lowering video quality, limiting background apps, and checking device settings.
MTN added that its billing processes are audited periodically by the Nigerian Communications Commission, and assessed using global standards for measuring data.
For consumers, clearer tracking can reduce confusion and improve trust, especially as video streaming and always-on apps increase everyday data use.
For MTN, the portal is a way to handle a long-running customer pain point without waiting for a regulatory escalation. If the portal is easy to understand and accurate, it could also reduce support tickets and churn, and improve perception of service quality.
This comes as telecoms operators face ongoing scrutiny on pricing, network quality, and transparency across Nigeria’s connectivity market.
