What Happened

CANAL+ announced a leadership change at Irdeto on 25 September 2026. Stéphane Baumier, the group’s CTO, will now chair Irdeto’s Supervisory Board. A supervisory board is a governance body that oversees strategy and management performance.

Irdeto is a CANAL+ company known for cybersecurity for digital platforms and content protection. Content protection is the set of tools that stops illegal copying and streaming of video. It also covers anti-fraud systems that protect subscriptions and advertising revenue.

Irdeto says it protects more than 6 billion devices worldwide and serves over 400 customers in more than 75 countries. The company is headquartered in the Netherlands. It also operates in video games, including through its Denuvo technology, which is widely used to reduce game piracy.

Baumier has been with CANAL+ since 2000. CANAL+ says much of his career has been international, including work in Senegal, Madagascar, Côte d’Ivoire, and Vietnam. Those markets face high piracy pressure, which is closely tied to Irdeto’s core business.

Why It Matters

Piracy, fraud, and cybercrime are direct costs for pay TV and streaming companies. When content is stolen or subscriptions are hijacked, fewer fees flow back into sports rights, film production, and local content budgets.

For Africa’s media and entertainment market, content security is also a commercial issue. Streaming growth increases the attack surface, meaning more apps, devices, and payment touchpoints that can be targeted.

The appointment suggests CANAL+ wants tighter coordination between group technology priorities and Irdeto’s product roadmap. It also signals continued investment in content protection, cybersecurity, and anti-piracy operations across CANAL+ markets.
