AXA Mansard Health won Afriglobal Medicare’s HMO of the Year award as NHIA data shows Nigeria’s health insurance coverage rose to 22 million people.
AXA Mansard Health, a health maintenance organisation, has won Afriglobal Medicare’s HMO of the Year award. An HMO is a company that manages health plans, collects premiums, and pays hospitals and clinics for members’ care.
The award was presented by Afriglobal Medicare, an ISO-certified diagnostics and healthcare provider. It cited AXA Mansard Health’s work across customer service and the delivery of health insurance solutions.
Tope Adeniyi, CEO of AXA Mansard Health, said the award reflects staff commitment and customer trust. He also pointed to the need for continued investment in preventive care, health financing, and partnerships.
Adebola Surakat, chief marketing officer at AXA Mansard, said the recognition raises expectations for service quality and for building new products that improve access to care.
The timing matters because Nigeria is pushing to expand health insurance coverage through reforms led by the Federal Government and the National Health Insurance Authority, also called NHIA. NHIA data cited in the report says around 22 million Nigerians are now covered, up by about six million since 2023.
NHIA also reported that more than ₦70 billion has been deployed through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund to strengthen primary healthcare and support vulnerable groups. Primary healthcare is the first level of care, such as clinics that handle routine treatment and prevention.
Even with growth, millions of Nigerians remain outside formal health insurance. For HMOs, the next phase likely depends on simpler onboarding, stronger provider networks, and digital service delivery, meaning mobile-first claims, customer support, and payments that reduce delays and out-of-pocket spending.
