Spiro Sustainability Report Sets 2040 Net-Zero Target

Spiro has released its first Sustainability Report.

The report sets a target of net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040. It also projects up to 0.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided each year by 2030 from product use.

What Happened

Spiro published its inaugural Sustainability Report on July 21, 2026. The document is meant to set a baseline for tracking environmental, social, and economic impact as the company scales electric mobility in Africa.

A key step in the report is an end-to-end greenhouse gas inventory that covers Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. Scope 1 is direct emissions from owned sources like company vehicles. Scope 2 is indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Scope 3 is the wider footprint, like suppliers and product use.

Spiro said operational efficiency work delivered an estimated 15 to 25% reduction in energy use at its assembly facilities last year. It is also evaluating on-site solar systems, sized at 80 to 125 KVA, for selected battery-swapping stations to reduce reliance on the grid.

On the people side, Spiro said its Spiro Academy trained more than 4,000 individuals across Africa in 2025. Training areas include EV maintenance, battery management, and technical operations. The report also points to “Africa’s first women electric motorcycle assembly line” as part of its inclusion efforts.

Economically, Spiro claims commercial riders using its electric motorcycles can cut operating costs by 70 to 80% compared with petrol-powered alternatives. That includes lower maintenance needs and reduced exposure to fuel price swings.

Why It Matters

Sustainability reports are becoming a core requirement for raising capital and winning partnerships, especially in climate and mobility. Publishing an ESG baseline makes it easier for investors and regulators to compare progress year to year.

For Africa’s electric mobility market, the report also signals what scale could look like. Targets like net-zero operations and quantified CO2 avoidance help move the conversation from marketing claims to measurable outcomes.
