The GSMA Innovation Fund is a grant funding and venture support mechanism created by the GSMA, the global industry association for mobile operators. The fund is currently backed by UK International Development from the UK government and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, with additional support from the GSMA and its members. According to available data it has awarded grants in sectors such as agri tech, health tech, education technology, fintech, and e commerce and retail, with investments recorded in Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana, and Rwanda. All recorded African investments in this dataset have been structured as grants, reflecting the fundโs role in de risking innovation rather than traditional equity focused venture capital. Across its various thematic windows, the GSMA Innovation Fund positions innovators to test, prove, and scale impactful digital solutions. It combines non dilutive grant funding with tailored technical assistance and venture building support, helping portfolio companies strengthen their business models, partnerships, and impact measurement. Since its launch, the fund has supported more than one hundred companies across sectors such as agriculture, climate resilience, e commerce, education, energy, financial services, humanitarian response, sanitation, waste management, and water.
