Alibaba Foundation

Alibaba Foundation, formally known as Alibaba Philanthropy Foundation, is a national non public charitable foundation established in 2011 and registered with China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs. It was set up by Alibaba Group and its subsidiaries to design, facilitate, and safeguard the group’s social responsibility and philanthropic vision. The foundation is based in China and focuses on using platforms and technology to support public welfare, with a vision of a bluer sky and warmer hearts. In Africa, Alibaba Foundation provides grant funding to technology enabled ventures that align with its focus on social impact. According to available investment records, it has deployed approximately 2.1 million dollars in grant funding between November 2021 and December 2025 across eleven rounds. These grants have primarily supported health technology solutions, with additional activity in e commerce and retail, travel and mobility, logistics and supply chain, services and marketplaces, and education technology. The foundation’s grants have focused on companies operating in Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Senegal. Through these grants, Alibaba Foundation has backed a range of African innovators, including health platforms that expand access to care, online pharmacies, interoperable medical data infrastructure, and virtual science labs that make practical learning more accessible. This activity reflects the foundation’s mandate to apply technology and platform capabilities to address social challenges and improve lives in underserved communities.
