BNI traces back to 12 December 1919, when the first branch of Crédit Foncier de Madagascar opened; it was renamed several times before becoming Bankin'ny Indostria (BNI) in 1975, when the state merged it with the industrial-financing arm of the Banque Nationale de Madagascar. Privatized in 1991 to Crédit Lyonnais (later part of Crédit Agricole), the bank passed to local ownership in 2014 when Crédit Agricole sold its 51% stake to Indian Ocean Financial Holdings, a consortium of Mauritius's CIEL Group and Madagascar's AXIAN Group, with the Malagasy government retaining a minority stake.

Today, BNI operates around 110 branches and over 140 ATMs across Madagascar, positioning itself as one of the country's leading banks for both retail and business banking.
