Vodacom Lesotho and STANLIB launch Tsetela, a mobile-based investment product that lets eligible M-Pesa users invest from their wallets and earn daily interest.
Vodacom Lesotho has launched Tsetela, a mobile-based investment solution that lets eligible M-Pesa customers invest directly from their wallets. It is positioned as a way to move M-Pesa beyond payments and transfers into everyday wealth building.
The service was developed through a partnership between VCL Financial Services, which operates M-Pesa in Lesotho, and STANLIB Lesotho. STANLIB said the goal is to reduce common barriers to formal investing, including bank account requirements and high minimum investment thresholds.
Tsetela supports daily interest accrual and balance viewing through USSD, which is a menu that works on basic phones without internet. Customers can also request withdrawals, subject to product terms and turnaround times.
Vodacom Lesotho said even small amounts can be invested, citing a minimum of M1. The company added it plans to expand the range of available portfolios over time.
STANLIB highlighted governance and safeguards aimed at building trust in a regulated product. These include licensing by the Central Bank of Lesotho, segregation of investor funds from company funds, annual audits, compliance reporting, and oversight by an independent trustee.
Mobile money products across Africa are increasingly adding savings and investment features, because the wallet is often the most trusted financial account a user has. In Lesotho, launching investing inside M-PESA Africa rails can widen access for people who rely on cash or informal group savings.
If uptake is strong, Tsetela could deepen deposit-like balances in the ecosystem and create a clearer on-ramp into regulated capital markets. It also raises the bar for how telecom-linked financial services handle investor protection, transparency, and liquidity for small, short-term investors.
