STUDIOCANAL launches STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS worldwide, expanding access to its 18,000-title catalogue and nearly 1,000 4K film restorations.
STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS is now live globally, as part of STUDIOCANAL’s push to package and re-release classic films from its catalogue. The primary goal is distribution, licensing, and marketing of older titles, with a stronger brand and a new logo.
STUDIOCANAL says its catalogue has more than 18,000 titles, making it one of the largest film libraries outside the US. The company also says it has spent close to €25 million over seven years to restore nearly 1,000 films in 4K. 4K restoration means rescanning and cleaning up older film masters to a higher-resolution format for modern screens.
For cinemas, STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS will back repertory and mainstream theatres with a slate of anniversary releases. That includes Michael Mann’s “Manhunter” in a new 4K version, “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” returning in multiple formats like 3D and 4DX, and a 4K restoration of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” with some 3D availability. The label also plans a Jacques Tati retrospective in Europe and a restored version of Ernst Lubitsch’s “To Be or Not To Be,” debuting in Venice Classics.
The company’s footprint covers several European markets and Australia and New Zealand, plus distribution partners in Scandinavia and South Africa. It also highlighted licensing work that links films to other media, including collaborations with gaming titles.
For African distributors and cinemas, the South Africa partner network matters because it can increase access to restored classics for theatrical runs and festival programming.
For streaming platforms and broadcasters, a clearer catalogue label can simplify licensing. Licensing is the paid right to show content in a region, on a channel, or for a time period.
For rights holders, STUDIOCANAL is signalling it will keep buying and exploiting catalogues across formats, from cinema screenings to home entertainment and brand tie-ins.
