Pick n Pay is rolling out OrderGrid’s AI store operations platform to more than 720 stores to speed online order fulfilment and reduce out of stocks.
Pick n Pay says it is rolling out an AI powered store operations platform across more than 720 stores.
The retailer says a multi store pilot using OrderGrid reduced average online order picking times by about 30%.
Pick n Pay says it is deploying OrderGrid’s platform as it looks to improve online order fulfilment and support growth in its grocery delivery business.
Pick n Pay says the rollout follows a two year technology re platforming programme. The company also says its online grocery sales increased by 35.4% in the 26 weeks ended 30 August.
The platform includes tools for real time inventory management, demand forecasting, order management and store execution. Real time inventory management means staff get a live view of stock levels, instead of relying on delayed updates.
Pick n Pay says the tools are meant to help store teams identify gaps on shelves, reduce out of stock products and fulfil online orders more efficiently.
Pick n Pay says it already uses computer vision, which is software that reads images like a person would, to detect shelf gaps. It also uses machine learning, which is software that learns patterns from data, to optimise routes followed by staff picking online orders.
Enrico Ferigolli, retail executive for omnichannel at Pick n Pay, says OrderGrid’s tools will help staff pick online orders more efficiently, “particularly larger baskets”.
Pick n Pay adds that it is expanding the functionality of its asap! online shopping app. New additions include Penny, a conversational AI powered grocery shopping assistant that lets customers discover products, plan meals and build shopping baskets using text, voice and images. The app has also added a clothing category, live shopping through its Inspire feature and Smart Shopper PRO, a subscription service offering additional savings, rewards and delivery benefits.
Pick n Pay is tying in store operations tech to online grocery growth, focusing on faster picking times and better stock visibility.
Aidan Mittra, co founder of OrderGrid, says accurate stock information matters as more customers use digital platforms to shop, and as more people begin shopping through AI assistants.
