Ozow Partners with Lula on SME Funding Access in SA

Ozow has partnered with Lula to let eligible South African SMEs apply for business funding inside the Ozow merchant portal, with dynamic eligibility checks.

In Short

  • Ozow and Lula have formed a partnership focused on improving SME access to business funding in South Africa.
  • Eligible Ozow merchants will be able to apply via a co-branded digital interface.
  • Lula will assess and fulfil funding applications.

What Happened

Ozow has partnered with LULA to expand funding access for South African SMEs. Ozow is a payments provider, which means it helps businesses accept and process customer payments.

The partnership adds a co-branded Ozow-Lula interface inside Ozow’s merchant tools. SMEs that already use Ozow for payments will be able to view potential funding eligibility and apply directly from the Ozow Merchant Portal.

Lula will handle the assessment and fulfilment of applications. In plain terms, Lula does the credit decision and provides the capital, while Ozow provides the distribution channel and payments data trail that can help with eligibility checks.

Ozow said the goal is to support merchants beyond payment processing. Lula said the partnership fits its “embedded” distribution strategy, meaning it places lending offers inside platforms SMEs already use, instead of forcing them to start a new application journey elsewhere.

Why It Matters

South African SMEs are under pressure from rising operating costs, including fuel and electricity, and wider economic uncertainty. For many small businesses, the biggest issue is not only the cost of money, but the time it takes to access it.

This deal is part of a wider fintech trend. Payment companies are increasingly bundling extra services like lending, invoicing, and cash flow tools into merchant dashboards. The idea is to reduce friction, which is the small but costly delays caused by switching platforms, re-entering data, and repeating compliance checks.

If Ozow merchants can see funding options and eligibility in the same place they manage payments, more SMEs may apply earlier, and potentially secure working capital in time to restock, cover payroll, or handle seasonal demand.
