Established in 2006 by Mastercard, it is based in Toronto, Canada, with additional offices in several African countries. The Foundation works with visionary organizations to enable young people in Africa to access meaningful and dignified work, with a focus on sectors such as education, agriculture, and the digital economy. In Africa it provides funding in the form of grants, and investment records show activity in Nigeria, supporting solutions in education technology and talent development. Its grantmaking in June 2023 included support for Nigerian companies Gradely and Schoola in the EdTech sector, and Schoolinka in HR and talent.
