Why did KebreaGhana shut down?

Kebrea was a Ghanaian online retailer selling electronics, home goods, fashion, baby and kids' products, beauty and health items, building materials, groceries and office supplies. Tech Labari reported it was registered in March 2015 by Richard E.K Amenyogbeli and Kweku E. Bentsi-Enchill, who financed it from their own savings, and that it offered hire-purchase and asset finance alongside outright sales. Local press attention is limited to two Tech Labari pieces in 2017 and January 2018. No source explains how or when it ended; the kebrea.com and kebrea.com.gh domains no longer exist in DNS and the Internet Archive holds only a single capture, from August 2019.

What KebreaGhana attempted

A general-merchandise e-commerce site for Ghana with a consumer-finance angle. Alongside straightforward retail across electronics, homeware, fashion, toys, beauty, health, building materials, groceries and office supplies, Kebrea offered hire purchase so buyers could spread payments. It deliberately refused cash on delivery, requiring card or mobile-money payment before dispatch, which the founders framed as pushing Ghanaian shoppers toward electronic payments; they advertised a '99% guarantee' on the safety of card and mobile-money payments. Stated plans at the start of 2018 were to widen access to asset finance, add distribution channels and expand regionally.

What worked

In their January 2018 Tech Labari interview the founders reported more than 350 clients served, more than 900 products delivered and more than GHS 500,110 in cumulative sales since March 2015. The business was entirely self-funded: the two co-founders each saved GHS 150 a month for five months to cover registration.

Early warning signs

The founders told Tech Labari it took about seven months to win their first 100 orders, and the interview's headline made that slow start its central point. A separate Tech Labari piece on online electronics shopping in Accra, published in May 2017, singled Kebrea out as having 'a nice clean look to their website' but immediately asked 'how reliable is their online payment and shipping?', reflecting the general trust problem the company's pay-before-delivery policy was fighting.

What happened

A full site search of Tech Labari - the only publication that ever covered Kebrea - confirms its archive contains exactly two Kebrea items, the May 2017 opinion piece and the 22 January 2018 founder interview, and nothing at all afterwards. Combined with the prior pass's findings that kebrea.com and kebrea.com.gh both return NXDOMAIN and that the last Internet Archive capture is August 2019, the picture is a company that stopped being written about in January 2018 and let its domains lapse. No UK company named Kebrea has ever existed on the Companies House register, and MEST Africa's current 'Our Entrepreneurs' page does not list it.

Lessons for future builders

Bootstrapping from GHS 150 a month keeps the founders in control and caps how fast anything can grow. Offering hire purchase on top means financing customers out of that same small pot, which turns every sale into a loan the business has to fund itself.
