Oui Capital has hired ex-operator and founder Pius Bankong as an investment associate. The move signals a shift toward hands-on VC staffing in Africa.
Oui Capital has added Pius Bankong as an investment associate.
The firm is leaning into an operator-led approach to early-stage investing, which prioritises practical support after funding.
Oui Capital hired Pius Bankong in January as a new investment associate. Oui Capital is a Lagos-based venture capital firm known for backing early-stage African startups and staying closely involved after investing.
Bankong brings an operator background. That means he has worked inside startups, helping teams execute day-to-day, not just advising from the outside. TechCabal reports he previously led business operations at fast-growing early-stage companies, working with founders on product-market fit, fundraising, partnerships, expansion, and hiring.
He has also built a company himself. Bankong previously founded a fintech startup called Stead Money and has advised other early-stage teams that later raised funding and grew revenue.
Oui Capital has built a visible portfolio in Africa, including bets on Moniepoint and Cauridor. The fund has been known for investing early, running a small team, and offering hands-on post-investment support.
The hire reflects a broader staffing shift in African venture capital. For years, many VC roles were filled by people coming from investment banking, consulting, or MBA programmes. More funds are now bringing in operators who have built in-market and understand execution constraints.
That matters because early-stage companies often need help getting from seed to Series A, which is the next major funding round after a startup has some traction. In many African markets, access to customers, reliable payments, partnerships, and senior talent can be harder than in more mature ecosystems.
For founders, an operator-investor can change what a pitch needs to include. Less focus on polished financial modelling, and more focus on evidence of real demand, clear distribution (how you reach customers), and a credible plan for execution.
For investors, it is also a bet that operational experience can improve selection and support. In a market where post-cheque help can be the difference between survival and shutdown, funds that can provide practical support may stand out.
