In Short

  • Nomba and DevCareer have opened registration for a 5-week, fully virtual payments hackathon for Nigerian teams.
  • The program runs from June 8 to July 18, 2026.
  • Total prizes are $6,500.
  • Builders who ship working integrations can qualify for the Nomba Developer Partner Program.

What Happened

Nomba is teaming up with DevCareer to run a virtual hackathon that asks Nigerian developer teams to build production-grade payments infrastructure using Nomba’s APIs.

An API is a set of building blocks that lets software talk to other software, like a checkout page sending payment instructions to a payment provider. In this case, teams will build on the Nomba API stack.

According to the announcement, the hackathon is designed as a recruiting filter for the Nomba Developer Partner Program. Developers who deliver a working integration and pass the judging threshold become candidates for the program. That partner program is a commercial setup where builders can earn based on the transaction volume they refer.

The hackathon targets cross-functional teams, not only coders. It is open to frontend and backend engineers, full stack developers, product designers, and product managers. Teams of two to four people are recommended, and projects must focus on real Nigerian use cases.

Challenge areas include “Build Tracks” that focus on shipping real products on Nomba’s current API surface. Examples mentioned include checkout, recurring payments, virtual accounts, and webhook-native applications. Webhooks are automatic notifications between systems, like a bank alert that triggers an app to mark an invoice as paid.

Why It Matters

Payments products often fail in the messy details, like retries, reconciliation, and handling delayed confirmations. A hackathon that pushes teams to ship production-grade integrations can produce more reliable building blocks for Nigerian merchants and platforms.

For developers, the bigger draw is not only prize money. The direct pathway into a partner program could turn hackathon work into ongoing revenue, especially for teams building payment plugins, invoicing flows, or subscription billing tools for SMEs.

For Nomba, this is also distribution. If more developers build and resell on its rails, it can expand adoption through third-party software instead of only direct sales.
