NiRA is considering lower .ng domain costs for SMEs through bundles and vouchers, plus new steps to curb domain squatting and protect trademarks.
NiRA wants to make .ng domain names cheaper for small businesses. It is looking at bundles, vouchers, and stronger brand protection. The goal is to boost adoption of Nigeria’s country domain.
The Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NiRA, says it is exploring ways to reduce .ng domain costs for small and medium-sized businesses. The group oversees Nigeria’s country code domain, which is the web address ending that signals a Nigerian digital identity.
NiRA President Adesola Akinsanya said one option is discounted bundle packages sold through NiRA-accredited registrars. A registrar is a company that sells domain names and handles renewals. The bundles could pair a .com.ng domain with web hosting, a one-page website, and basic business tools, which is like getting a simple website starter kit in one purchase.
NiRA is also considering SME domain vouchers. Under this approach, participating registrars would still provide the registration service, while NiRA would offer wholesale subsidies to reduce the final price paid by the business. Akinsanya said this could run through partnerships with SME agencies and business groups.
On brand safety, NiRA is reviewing measures to curb domain squatting. This is when someone registers a valuable domain name mainly to resell it later, or to block the real brand from using it. NiRA said it already has a dispute resolution process, where complaints can be filed with the registry and handled under its policies.
NiRA also proposed a Brand or Trademark Notification Service. The idea is that verified trademark owners could register their marks and get alerts or protections when similar .ng domains are being registered.
For Nigerian SMEs, cheaper .ng domains could lower the cost of setting up a basic online presence. That matters for credibility, customer trust, and search visibility.
For the ecosystem, tighter anti-squatting rules and trademark tools can reduce scams and brand impersonation. That helps local companies protect their names as more commerce and customer support move online.
