Seamfix will develop Nigeria’s National Cooperative Smart Registry with CVN and CoopID to verify co-ops and members, reduce fraud, and improve targeting.
Seamfix Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop and deploy the National Cooperative Smart Registry, a digital identity and verification infrastructure for Nigeria’s cooperative sector.
The agreement was signed in Abuja on August 12, 2026. It involves the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria.
The infrastructure has three linked parts. The National Cooperative Smart Registry, or NCSR, is planned as a single national platform for verified cooperative information. The Cooperative Verification Number, or CVN, gives each registered cooperative society a unique verified digital identity, similar to how a company gets a unique registration number. The Cooperative Member Identification Number, called CoopID, does the same for each member.
The partners said the new platform is designed to support existing government registration and regulation. It is not meant to replace the statutory roles of the Federal Department of Cooperatives and state cooperative agencies.
Nigeria has more than 370,000 registered cooperative societies, with membership estimated in the tens of millions. These co-ops span agriculture, commerce, manufacturing, housing, transport, and finance.
Cooperatives often act as informal financial and distribution networks, especially in agriculture and trade. When records are fragmented, it becomes harder to confirm who a co-op is, who its members are, and whether it is eligible for government programmes.
A national registry and verified IDs could reduce duplicate registrations and identity fraud. It could also help government agencies and partners target interventions, grants, and credit support more accurately.
For fintechs, lenders, and insurers that work with cooperatives, a standard verification layer can lower onboarding friction. It can also improve KYC, which means checking identity to meet compliance rules, and reduce risk when serving large member-based groups.
