Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma won Meta’s AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon in Nairobi, taking $5,000 each in equity-free funding plus ad credits.
Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma won Meta’s inaugural AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon in Nairobi. Each startup received $5,000 in equity-free funding, plus Meta advertising credits.
Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma emerged as winners at the AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon, hosted in Nairobi by Meta and local AI accelerator This Is Digital.
The two startups beat eight other finalists. They were also invited to pitch at Meta’s Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, on November 24.
Neural Labs Africa won with NeuralSight, an AI-powered teleradiology platform. Teleradiology means sending medical images, like X-rays, to specialists who can read them remotely. The startup said the product can support diagnostic reporting even in areas with weak internet connectivity.
Me-Nasoma won for a tool that converts documents and web pages into audio in local languages. It works across mobile, web, and a browser extension, targeting students, professionals, and readers who struggle to access written content.
Organisers said the contest drew more than 400 applications. Other finalists included HakiChain, described as an AI legal tool built on African law, and Sawazisha AI, a WhatsApp assistant aimed at helping small businesses comply with Kenya Revenue Authority eTIMS invoicing. The finalist list also included TemboTrade, described as a sales, inventory, and M-Pesa payments platform for small businesses, similar to tools like TemboAI.
Equity-free funding is cash that does not take company shares, which can help early-stage founders extend runway without dilution.
The Meta advertising credits can also matter, since distribution costs, meaning the money it takes to reach users, are a major hurdle for many African AI startups.
Finally, the Istanbul pitch invite gives the winners a shot at regional visibility, partner introductions, and follow-on capital, at a time when interest is rising in locally built AI products for healthcare, education, and small business operations.
