Mauritius Telecom says Digital Council Africa recognised its work on digital transformation at CONEXT 2026 in Johannesburg. Mauritius Telecom positioned the award as a signal that it is moving beyond connectivity and into AI products.
At the event, CEO Veemal Gungadin outlined what the company calls the “Mauritius AI stack.” In simple terms, an AI stack is the full set of building blocks needed to run AI, including infrastructure, models, and applications.
Mauritius Telecom said this stack includes “sovereign AI infrastructure,” which usually means compute and data hosted under local control, plus a portfolio of tools. These include mytGPT for enterprise AI, myt AI Cloud for “Model-as-a-Service” (a way to rent access to AI models like you rent cloud servers), myt Learn for education, and AI voice agents named Kevin AI and Sarah AI.
African telecom operators are looking for new revenue streams beyond voice and data. Enterprise AI services, cloud-hosted AI models, and voice automation are all areas where telcos can sell to businesses and governments.
Mauritius Telecom also framed its work around data control. That matters in markets where regulators and large organisations want AI capabilities, but are cautious about sending sensitive data to overseas platforms.
If the operator can package its tools for other countries, it could join a growing group of African players pushing local AI infrastructure and applications, not only reselling global cloud services.
