Medshield Medical Scheme said it will add four managed care products from 1 January 2027. Managed care is a structured way to guide healthcare, often using agreed provider networks, clinical rules, and pre-approved pathways to control costs and improve outcomes.
The scheme said the planned products include primary care-led mental health services via Clicks. “Primary care-led” means members start with a GP or frontline clinician, rather than going straight to a specialist.
Medshield also plans to offer hospital-at-home care with Mediclinic. Hospital-at-home is when patients who qualify medically receive hospital-level treatment at home, supported by clinicians and remote monitoring tools (connected devices that send readings back to a care team).
Two other planned products are access to newer oncology treatment options and integrated chronic care management via Medscheme. Chronic care management typically means ongoing support for long-term conditions like diabetes or hypertension, with follow-ups and medication adherence checks.
South Africa’s medical schemes are under pressure from rising healthcare costs, higher use of specialist services, growing chronic disease, and increasing mental health demand. Medshield is framing partnerships as one way to deliver more connected services without trying to build everything in-house.
The plan also signals a shift toward value-based care, which is paying providers based on improved health outcomes rather than the number of services billed. If executed well, this model can reduce repeat admissions and improve continuity across pharmacies, hospitals, and managed care organisations.
For members, the headline impact is likely to be more “end-to-end” support, especially in mental health and home-based acute care. For healthcare operators and healthtech vendors, it is another example of schemes using partner ecosystems and defined care pathways to extend access while managing risk and cost.
