Axmed will distribute ViiV Healthcare HIV medicines as a non-exclusive distributor, helping 50+ middle-income countries buy drugs via a procurement platform.
Axmed, a technology-enabled medicines procurement company, says it has partnered with ViiV Healthcare to expand access to HIV medicines in middle-income countries.
Under the agreement, ViiV appointed Axmed as a non-exclusive distributor. Non-exclusive means ViiV can work with other distributors too, and buyers are not locked into a single channel.
The partnership is designed to help local governments and healthcare institutions in more than 50 middle-income countries procure, which means buy and import, ViiV’s HIV medicines through Axmed.
Axmed says it will use its procurement infrastructure to aggregate demand, which means bundling orders across multiple buyers to create larger, clearer purchase volumes. It will also improve visibility on orders and connect eligible buyers to suppliers and logistics partners, the companies that handle storage, shipping, and delivery.
ViiV framed the partnership as a response to access gaps in middle-income countries. These markets often do not qualify for some lower-income access mechanisms, even when local health systems still struggle with cost and supply reliability.
For public health programmes, procurement and supply chain coordination can be as important as the medicine itself. Stockouts, long lead times, and fragmented buying can delay treatment access, even when funding exists.
A centralized procurement platform can help governments and hospitals compare options, plan demand earlier, and streamline purchasing steps. In practice, that can reduce duplication and improve the odds that medicines arrive on time.
For Africa’s health tech and supply chain ecosystem, the deal also highlights a growing role for software and data in essential medicine distribution, not just last-mile delivery. The impact will depend on which countries participate and how quickly procurement cycles move through the new channel.
