Mawingu says it is providing the connectivity behind a live-streaming programme that lets teachers at Isiolo Girls High School teach learners across Isiolo County.
The setup means a teacher in Isiolo can run a Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Physics, or Biology class that students in towns like Meriti, Sericho, Oldoniro, and Garbatula can follow in real time. Live streaming is a video lesson broadcast over the internet, similar to a video call, but designed for a class.
The programme includes five schools, Isiolo Girls, Isiolo Boys, Mary’s Secondary, Adegani Secondary, and Ondonjilo Secondary. It started in 2021 after COVID-19 disruptions, according to county ICT champion teacher Eric Kinoti.
Connectivity was a key constraint early on. The programme previously relied on internet support through partnerships involving Kenya’s Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission, but that support ended in 2024. Mawingu then became the internet provider to keep lessons running.
Inside Isiolo Girls, the impact extends beyond streaming. The school already had computers from an Oracle-supported centre of excellence programme, but limited internet meant staff relied on modems and paid data bundles for exam registration and uploading practical subject marks. Mawingu says Wi-Fi now reaches classrooms, labs, the library, and the computer lab, making online admin and digital learning materials easier to access.
Mawingu also supported teacher training at the Isiolo Youth Innovation Centre. The training covered basic ICT skills and using tools like Google Meet, Google Classroom, and Microsoft Teams.
Isiolo County includes remote areas where schools can struggle to hire enough subject teachers. A shared live-streaming model helps spread limited teaching capacity across multiple schools.
It also shows how connectivity can turn existing hardware into usable learning infrastructure. For education leaders and edtech operators, the practical blocker is often not devices, it is stable internet plus teacher support to use online platforms consistently.
