M-PESA Tanzania has partnered with PayPal to let users move money between PayPal accounts and M-Pesa wallets via the M-Pesa Super App for cross-border payments.
Vodacom M-Pesa Tanzania said it is linking PayPal with M-PESA through the M-Pesa Super App. This means eligible users can transfer funds between their PayPal accounts and their M-Pesa mobile money wallets.
Users will be able to deposit money into PayPal and withdraw from PayPal into M-Pesa. The flow will work through account linking in the app, with a guided onboarding process. Interoperability is the key idea here, it means two different payment systems can work together without extra steps.
Vodacom said details like transaction limits, onboarding requirements, and launch timelines will be shared through its official customer channels. M-Pesa’s acting director, Tulisindo Mlupilo, positioned the partnership as part of a wider push for financial inclusion. PayPal’s MEA regional head, Otto Williams, said the goal is simpler international transactions for Tanzanian customers.
For Tanzanians earning online, getting paid from international clients can be slow or expensive. A direct PayPal to M-Pesa connection could reduce the number of middle steps, like using a third-party exchanger or waiting for bank processing.
The service is also aimed at software developers, content creators, entrepreneurs, and other gig economy workers. Cross-border payments matter more as remote work and online trade grow in Tanzania. If the user experience is smooth and fees are reasonable, this could become a default payout route for PayPal-based income into mobile money.
