Klump has shut down, CEO Celestine Omin said. The Nigerian BNPL startup raised $1.2 million and struggled with lending capital and integrations.
Klump has shut down after five years.
Klump, a Nigerian buy now, pay later (BNPL, a way to pay over time) startup, has shut down, according to a post by its co-founder and CEO, Celestine Omin.
“Today, with heavy hearts, we are announcing that Klump is shutting down. We are proud of what we built. Few things are as fulfilling as watching people use a product that once existed only in your imagination,” Omin wrote.
Omin co-founded Klump with Olufunbi Falayi in 2021. The company set out to bring BNPL capabilities to Nigerians shopping online.
Klump’s flagship product, Pay with Klump, let customers buy products immediately and spread payments across four instalments. Klump said it also gave merchants another way to convert shoppers who might otherwise abandon their carts.
It also said the startup struggled with lending capital, slow integrations, and lender constraints.
Klump’s shutdown shows how dependent BNPL businesses can be on access to lending capital. It also points to operational pressure from slow integrations, which can delay getting BNPL options working inside merchant checkouts.
For merchants, the closure removes one BNPL option that was positioned as a way to reduce cart abandonment by letting shoppers pay in instalments.
