Hygeia HMO has launched a Refer and Earn program that rewards customers with vouchers and streaming subscriptions for HyBasic and HyPrime referrals.
Hygeia HMO introduced a Refer and Earn program to drive sign-ups for its retail health insurance plans, including HyBasic and HyPrime.
The idea is simple. If you refer someone who buys an eligible plan, you get a reward. The company says rewards can include shopping vouchers and subscriptions for popular streaming services, such as Netflix and Spotify.
Hygeia is positioning the program around the everyday cost of paying for healthcare out of pocket. It is also highlighting plan features like telemedicine, which means speaking to a doctor remotely by phone or video call.
The Refer and Earn page points potential buyers to Hygeia’s broader retail plan lineup. The plans vary by annual price, hospital access categories, and benefit limits like inpatient and outpatient cover.
For Nigerian insurers and HMOs, retail adoption is still a hard sell. Many households delay buying health cover until a medical emergency forces a decision. Referral rewards are a common growth tactic in fintech and e-commerce, and HMOs are now borrowing it to reduce customer acquisition costs.
For customers, the pitch is two-sided. The referred person gets a structured health plan, and the referrer gets a tangible perk. Streaming subscriptions and vouchers are easy to understand, and they may feel more immediate than longer-term insurance benefits.
For the market, the move is another sign that health insurance providers are leaning into consumer-style marketing and digital channels, including telemedicine and online purchase journeys. That can increase awareness, but long-term retention will still depend on claims experience, provider quality, and how quickly members can access care.
