Happy Pay has publicly launched Happy Ads, an AI-powered performance media platform that charges retailers only when a campaign results in a sale.
The company says the product is built for retailers that want performance marketing, meaning ads measured by sales outcomes rather than attention.
Happy Pay provides zero-cost installment payments through its ad-subsidised payments network. It connects merchants with “high-intent” shoppers, letting consumers split purchases into interest-free instalments while helping retailers with customer acquisition, conversion, and basket expansion.
Happy Ads lets brands promote products and offers to more than 800,000 registered Happy Pay users. It also reaches two million customers across Happy Pay’s partner network. Happy Pay said a further six million users are set to join the network soon.
During a pilot phase, Happy Ads generated more than ZAR100 million (US$6.1 million) in merchant sales. Happy Pay said it delivered more than 268 million impressions and an average 20x return on ad spend.
Happy Pay positions Happy Ads as different from traditional digital advertising, where brands pay for impressions or clicks. Happy Ads uses a cost-per-acquisition model, meaning retailers set the commission they will pay and are only charged when a campaign converts into a completed sale.
“Most digital advertising platforms sell attention and leave retailers hoping that attention eventually turns into revenue,” said Wesley Billett, co-founder and CEO of Happy Pay. “Happy Ads flips that model. If we don’t generate a sale, the merchant doesn’t pay.”
Happy Pay said the platform combines product discovery, targeted distribution, payments and transaction-level attribution, meaning it links ads to completed transactions. It also uses an AI recommendation engine that ranks products for each shopper based on browsing, purchase history and interests, with every completed sale feeding back into the model. Shoppers can check out using Happy Pay’s interest-free instalments or any of the retailer’s existing payment methods.
Happy Pay is pitching BNPL as more than checkout financing. “Buy Now Pay Later should be more than a payment button at checkout,” Billett said. “It creates one of the most powerful customer-acquisition flywheels in retail.”
For retailers, the pitch is simple, advertising spend is tied directly to sales rather than clicks or views. For Happy Pay, the product strengthens its ad-subsidised payments network by connecting media, payments, and attribution in one loop.
