Discovery Bank was named South Africa’s Winning Bank Service in the 2026 ASK AFRICA Orange Index, extending its five-year customer experience streak.
Discovery Bank has been named South Africa’s Winning Bank Service in the 2026 ASK AFRICA Orange Index. The award extends Discovery Bank’s run as the banking category winner for five consecutive years, from 2022 through 2026.
ASK AFRICA Orange Index is a customer experience benchmark, meaning it measures what it is like to deal with a brand, not just whether customers say they are satisfied. It looks at operational factors such as responsiveness, competence, convenience, and resolution. It also measures emotional signals like trust, empathy, authenticity, and whether customers feel understood.
The 2026 study assessed 219 brands across 27 industries. It was based on 54,182 interviews conducted between 13 March and 22 June 2026.
The Index positions itself as independent. Brands cannot commission, influence, or veto their ranking.
For South African banking, consistent customer experience performance is hard to sustain. Leadership in service rankings often changes year to year, especially as banks update apps, call centres, and fraud controls.
The research also points to a wider market signal. ASK AFRICA reported that while 90% of customers say they are satisfied, only 48% say they are delighted. It also found a growing gap between what brands deliver and how customers feel, which suggests trust and emotional connection are becoming harder to build.
For operators and product teams across Banking and digital finance, the takeaway is clear. Reliability and speed still matter, but customers increasingly judge banks on whether interactions feel simple and human, especially when problems need to be resolved.
