Delta State Innovation Hub hosted its ninth Tech Talks in Asaba, urging young talent to treat careers like businesses through skills, branding, and value.
Delta State Innovation Hub hosted its latest Tech Talks in Asaba on the last Friday of the month. The session pushed attendees to treat their career like a business, meaning they should manage it with clear goals, a strong public profile, and measurable value.
The hub is managed by Schoolville, led by CEO Charles Omordia. It was established in July 2016 and is among the older government-backed tech hubs in Nigeria. Organisers said it has remained active on the local tech calendar even after a temporary shutdown.
About 100 people attended. The audience included 12 newly inducted fellows of the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme, industry leaders, and secondary school students from nearby schools. There were also younger learners, aged 11 to 16, from the hubโs departments.
The event opened with a Q and A on whether artificial intelligence can replace teachers. Artificial intelligence is software that can generate text, images, or predictions by learning from data, similar to a very advanced autocomplete. After that, guest speaker Otuto James Anene, an automation engineer, delivered a talk titled โYour Career Is a Business.โ
Anene broke down three terms people often mix up, job, career, and business. He described a job as paid work that can be temporary. He described a career as a long-term path built through skills, experience, projects, and learning. He described a business as a system that solves a problem and gets rewarded.
For tech workers and students, the talk reflects a wider shift in the HR & Talent market. Hiring is becoming more skills-first, and visibility now matters alongside certificates.
The message is also practical for founders and early-career builders in smaller ecosystems outside Lagos and Abuja. Treating yourself as โthe assetโ can translate into clearer portfolios, better networking, and stronger positioning for internships, fellowships, and junior roles.
Finally, the AI discussion at the start shows how education and career planning are being reshaped by new tools. The near-term focus is less about replacement and more about how students and teachers use AI to improve learning outcomes and productivity.
