Bolt has introduced three new ride categories in Kenya, letting riders pay more to get picked up faster, wait longer for lower fares, or book by the hour.
Bolt has rolled out three new ride categories in Kenya. Riders can choose to pay extra for a faster pick-up, wait longer for a cheaper fare, or book a car by the hour.
Bolt has introduced Priority, Wait and Save, and Ride by Hour in Kenya.
Priority lets riders pay a premium to be matched with a driver faster. Bolt says it is aimed at people heading to meetings, flights, or other time-sensitive appointments.
Wait and Save offers lower fares to riders who are willing to wait for demand to ease. Bolt positions it for cost-conscious riders, including during peak hours.
Ride by Hour lets riders book a car for one or two hours at a fixed hourly rate. It is priced on time rather than distance, and Bolt says it is aimed at errands, shopping, and business visits with several stops. Bolt also says Ride by Hour carries no extra charge per stop during the booking.
Dimmy Kanyankole, Bolt’s senior General Manager for rides in East Africa, said: “These categories give customers more control over how they travel, whether they want a faster pick-up, a lower fare by waiting for demand to ease, or the flexibility of having a car for multiple stops.”
Bolt says the options will also help drivers. It says Priority gives drivers access to higher-value trips, while Wait and Save can bring in riders who might otherwise skip a trip when fares are high.
Bolt says the hourly model gives drivers more predictable earnings and could reduce disputes with riders over waiting time and extra stops.
The company also said drivers remain free to choose which trips they accept, and that Priority is offered alongside, not instead of, standard rides.
The rollout comes as Bolt and rivals compete for riders in what the source describes as a price-sensitive market. The source also notes that drivers have repeatedly protested over low fares and high platform commissions.
Bolt says the rollout follows its launch of Bolt Plus, a subscription offering ride cashback and free food delivery.
