Andela, OpenAI and Miva Open University brought 200 developers and engineers together in Lagos to build and demo AI learning projects.
Andela hosted “Codex in Action: Engineering the Future of Learning with AI” with OpenAI and Miva Open University in Lagos.
200 developers and engineers took part, split between 100 Miva developers and 100 senior Andela engineers.
The teams demoed AI-powered projects focused on education and lifelong learning after a three-week development program.
Andela, OpenAI and Miva Open University brought together 200 developers and engineers in Lagos for “Codex in Action: Engineering the Future of Learning with AI,” powered by OpenAI Academy. The event took place at the Civic Centre alongside TechCabal’s Moonshot 2026.
The group included 100 Miva developers and 100 senior Andela engineers. The participants worked through a three-week development program and presented AI-powered projects aimed at education and lifelong-learning needs.
Miva said its developers were selected from more than 1,000 applicants. They were trained in OpenAI Codex, a coding assistant that helps generate and edit software code, before collaborating with Andela engineers.
The top project was Coteacher, created by Miva student Esih Egwurube. The project turns a teacher’s recording into personalised lesson materials. It also lets students revisit lessons offline, request alternative explanations or activities, and use an AI voice tutor when online.
Andela and partners described the event as the second chapter of the pan-African Codex Champions Series, after an earlier edition in Nairobi.
The event adds another example of structured training programs that link learners with senior engineers and end with working demos.
Andela also reported that 200 senior developers who completed two weeks of applied learning improved their assessed engineering proficiency by 36 percentage points over baseline. That data point gives a concrete outcome for the kind of short, intensive learning format used in the program.
