HOSTAFRICA sponsored the Clawd & Claws developer meetup focused on showcasing projects built with AI. HostAfrica also used the event to demonstrate HCode, its application deployment platform.
Clawd & Claws was run as a series of five minute “lightning” demos, with developers showing what they are building with AI tools. The format was pitched as short and practical, with no lengthy presentations or corporate sales pitches.
HostAfrica presented HCode as a South African alternative to Vercel, with local infrastructure and pricing in rands. HCode was described as a way to make deployment simpler, so developers can spend less time dealing with hosting and more time building.
During the session, attendees could scan a QR code and submit ideas for applications to build. Working prototypes were created in real time and run on HCode. Examples mentioned included a tower building game and a movie tracker. HostAfrica also shared an example of an AI misunderstanding, where an idea to track green traffic lights was interpreted as tracking “green robots.”
The meetup also included other demos such as a fuel tracking application that expanded into a broader dashboard with geographical data and a compass. Additional examples mentioned were bird tracking apps, data visualisations, and a voxel art fighter jet game.
The event highlighted how AI assisted development can speed up prototyping, meaning an idea can turn into something usable more quickly. HostAfrica’s takeaway was that development is not going away, but that the way developers work is changing.
The post also argued that AI coding assistants can reduce routine work and shift more effort toward guiding tools, overseeing projects, and solving problems. For meetups like Clawd & Claws, the value is in seeing what people are building, sharing ideas, and learning how others approach problems.
