Africa GreenCo raised $21.5m in its third close, with $11.5m from PIDG and IFDK and new private investor Sanlam Alternative Investments joining.
Africa GreenCo has announced new funding to expand its renewable energy trading platform across Southern Africa. The company said existing shareholders, the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) and Impact Fund Denmark (IFDK, formerly IFU), invested an additional $11.5 million.
The update follows Sanlam Alternative Investments joining as a new private-sector investor. That makes the total third-close raise $21.5 million.
Africa GreenCo operates as an energy trader and intermediary offtaker, meaning it can buy power from renewable energy producers and resell it to utilities or large buyers. An offtaker is the party that agrees to buy electricity, similar to a guaranteed buyer in a supply chain.
The company has been trading for almost five years. It became a member of the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) in late 2021. SAPP is a regional electricity market where countries and power companies can buy and sell electricity across borders.
Africa GreenCo says it now has licenses in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa. It reported trading more than 1.4 TWh this year. A TWh is a terawatt-hour, a large unit of electricity equal to one billion kilowatt-hours.
Africa GreenCo’s model targets a common barrier to scaling renewables in Africa, which is payment risk. Many renewable energy Independent Power Producers, or IPPs, struggle to secure financing when buyers are seen as risky.
The company said the new investments, alongside guarantee support tied to the European Commission-funded EFSD+ programme and PIDG’s GuarantCo, will strengthen its liquidity buffer and risk capacity. In simple terms, this is cash and cover that helps it keep paying sellers even when buyers pay late.
Africa GreenCo says this should help it support up to 900 MW of renewable power purchase agreements, or PPAs. A PPA is a long-term contract to buy electricity, similar to a multi-year subscription that makes project revenues more predictable.
