Abay Bank signed a tripartite project agreement with DSIK and Sparkasse Schwarzwald-Baar to strengthen ESG capacity and sustainable finance in Eastern Africa.
Abay Bank said it has entered a new three-party cooperation with Deutsche Sparkassenstiftung für internationale Kooperation (DSIK) and Sparkasse Schwarzwald-Baar, a German savings bank based in the Stuttgart region.
The agreement was signed by Abay Bank CEO Yehuala Gessesse, DSIK project manager Oliver Schuster, and Sparkasse Schwarzwald-Baar CEO Arendt Gruben.
Abay Bank said the partnership will help it advance ESG practices and strengthen institutional capacity. In plain terms, this is about upgrading internal skills, policies, and tools so the bank can measure risks better, make more responsible lending decisions, and report more clearly to regulators and stakeholders.
The bank also linked the project to sustainable transformation of the financial sector in Eastern Africa. That typically includes building processes for climate risk management, safer lending to high risk sectors, and better governance controls.
The announcement follows an earlier partnership between Abay Bank and DSIK signed in November 2025. That earlier agreement also focused on improving the bank’s strategic direction and capabilities around ESG.
Banks across Africa are under growing pressure to show how they manage climate and social risks. ESG frameworks are also becoming more relevant for access to international capital, correspondent banking relationships, and development finance support.
For Abay Bank, working with DSIK and a German savings bank can bring structured training and operational playbooks that are already used in mature banking markets. That can shorten the learning curve for risk management, compliance, and sustainability reporting.
For the wider region, these partnerships can influence how local banks design green finance products, evaluate projects, and build governance standards. Even without disclosed funding, capacity-building programs often shape lending rules and bank operations for years.
