British International Investment plc, formerly CDC Group, is the United Kingdom’s development finance institution and an impact investor wholly owned by the UK government. It is managed by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and focuses on supporting private sector growth in developing and emerging economies. British International Investment is headquartered in the United Kingdom and has expanded significantly over recent years as part of the UK’s broader development finance offer. In Africa, British International Investment provides patient and flexible capital across a range of instruments, including equity, debt, and grants, in line with its role as a development finance institution. From July 2021 to June 2025, it has participated in at least three African funding rounds across Series B, debt financing, and grant stages. Over this period it has backed fintech and agri tech companies in markets such as Senegal, Kenya, and Nigeria, including Wave in Senegal, Pula in Kenya, and TeamApt Limited in Nigeria. British International Investment invests to create more productive, sustainable, and inclusive economies by supporting businesses that can drive development impact. Its mission is to help solve major global development challenges by mobilising long term capital into sectors and regions that are critical for job creation and economic transformation, particularly in Africa and South Asia.
