Invest XD

Online marketplace for ghanaian investment products

Epitaph

Here lies InvestXD. Three MEST graduates built a place to buy Ghanaian unit trusts and treasury bills without queueing at a bank. It pitched at DEMO Africa and did not place. The only investment product it ever finally listed was its own domain, for sale.

Autopsy report

Why did Invest XD shut down?

InvestXD was an Accra-based fintech founded in 2017 by three graduates of MEST, the pan-African tech training programme in Ghana - a Ghanaian co-founder writing as Yao, Andrew from Kenya and Emmanuel from Nigeria. It built a web platform for discovering, buying and monitoring Ghanaian investment products - mutual funds, unit trusts, fixed deposits and treasury bills - without visiting a bank branch. It pitched at the DEMO Africa Ghana leg in 2018 without winning. No reporting was found on when or why it stopped.

What Invest XD attempted

InvestXD was an investment marketplace: users created an account online, browsed and compared investment products from Ghanaian fund managers, funded purchases by mobile money, and tracked their holdings in one place. The founders' own account describes educational modules explaining investment concepts to first-time investors, and a roadmap that included automated advice and crypto assets. The idea came from the founders' own experience of the time cost of investing in Ghana - multiple bank visits and long queues - and followed research the team did across Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana.

What worked

The three founders met at MEST in Accra and built the product there. InvestXD was one of ten Ghanaian startups selected to pitch at the DEMO Africa Ghana country leg reported in July 2018, alongside eventual winners Complete Farmer, DevLess and RedBird; InvestXD did not place.

What happened

The Internet Archive's most recent capture of investxd.com is 13 December 2019 (HTTP 200), with none after it. Fetched on 2 August 2026, https://www.investxd.com/ returns an HTTP 302 redirect to https://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=investxd.com, the domain-broker for-sale page, confirming the domain lapsed and was picked up by a reseller; DNS still resolves (13.223.25.84 / 54.243.117.197) but only to that parking service. Tech Labari, the Ghanaian outlet that covered this cohort of Accra startups most closely, returns zero results for 'InvestXD' across its whole archive. No UK holding company of that name exists on the Companies House register.

Lessons for future builders

  • An aggregator has to persuade the institutions whose products it lists, and three graduates with a web platform had nothing those institutions needed. Placing at a pitch competition is not distribution, and not placing is not the reason a company ends.
