Web Summit will host its first-ever Africa event in Cabo Verde this December, using its Spotlight format to link local founders with global networks.
Web Summit will run its first Africa event in Cabo Verde this December. Web Summit is best known for its flagship conference in Lisbon, plus regional events in cities like Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, and Hong Kong.
The Cabo Verde event will be a Spotlight gathering. Spotlight is Web Summit’s format for building links between fast-growing local startup scenes and established international investors, operators, and tech companies. These events are typically smaller than the main Web Summit conference, with a tighter focus on introductions and ecosystem exposure.
The event is being organised in partnership with the Parque Tecnológico de Cabo Verde, with support from public and private institutions. Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave pointed to Cabo Verde’s position between Africa, Europe, and the Americas as a reason for the choice.
Many observers expected Web Summit’s first Africa stop to be in larger markets like South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, or Egypt. Instead, the selection signals that smaller countries with clear policy direction and good connectivity can compete for global tech attention.
For Cabo Verde, hosting Web Summit is a credibility boost for its strategy around digital infrastructure, entrepreneurship programmes, and startup-friendly policy frameworks. It can also help local founders get meetings that are harder to access without a major international event in-country.
For the broader African tech ecosystem, the move adds another international conference brand to the continent’s events calendar. It also raises a practical question for founders and investors, which is whether Spotlight will deliver meaningful deal flow, partnerships, and follow-on events across more African hubs after Cabo Verde.
