Water Ledger Global (WLG) has secured a strategic investment from Launch Africa. WLG says it will use the funding to scale its shared trust infrastructure for water globally.
Water Ledger Global is a South African-founded water data startup. It was founded in October 2024 by a South African team, and it has roots in Australia going back to 2016.
WLG is behind Water Ledger, a platform that creates a single, trusted record of how much water there is, who is using it, and what it is worth. In simple terms, it aims to act like one shared ledger that multiple parties can rely on, instead of each group keeping separate records.
WLG says the platform breaks down data silos, and gives regulators, utilities, investors and lenders a shared source of truth. The startup says the goal is to turn water into a transparent, investable asset class.
WLG has subsidiaries in South Africa, Australia and the United States, and says its technology is already live. Its SWaN solution for mitigation and nutrient markets operates in Virginia. Its water accounting and trading solution is used by Seqwater in Australia.
Fred Platt, CEO of Water Ledger Global, said: “Capital follows confidence. In a very short time we have taken a bold idea and turned it into real solutions to real water challenges.” He added: “We are not just building technology; we are building the trust backbone for water.”
Uwem Uwemakpan, head of investments at Launch Africa, said the platform addresses a real need as the push for transparency and more funding into local utilities grows.
WLG said the new funding will help it take its platform to more utilities, regulators, water users and markets. Launch Africa also said the record-keeping approach is what can give investors and lenders confidence to put capital into water infrastructure.
