What Happened

Virgua is a Nigerian safety app founder Franklyn Eluagu is building to help people share “just enough” information when something feels wrong. The app turns a smartphone into a check-in tool that can escalate into an SOS if a user stops responding.

Virgua’s flow starts before you head out. You set how long you expect to be away and choose trusted contacts. While you are out, the app sends periodic prompts. You respond by entering a private PIN, which resets the timer.

If you miss a check-in, Virgua gives a 15-minute grace period. If there is still no response, it sends an SMS to the people you picked saying you may need attention. If another 15 minutes passes, the alert escalates into an SOS that includes a live location, a short ambient audio recording, and a private link where contacts can track movement in real time.

The app also treats a powered-off phone as a strong warning signal. In that case, Virgua triggers the same alert flow, but shares the last known location, since live tracking is no longer possible.

Virgua is designed to work even when mobile data is unreliable. A physical SOS action can route alerts through the mobile network as SMS.

Personal safety apps often fail in Nigeria when they rely on loud alarms or always-on internet. Virgua’s staged approach is built for real-life uncertainty, including dead batteries, stolen phones, patchy connectivity, and delayed reactions from friends and family.
