Telkom has committed R100 million, about $6.1 million, to launch the Telkom AI Institute for job-ready AI and digital skills training in South Africa.
Telkom announced a R100 million commitment to launch the Telkom AI Institute, a platform focused on artificial intelligence skills training in South Africa. AI, short for artificial intelligence, refers to software that can learn from data and perform tasks like writing, summarising, or spotting patterns, similar to a fast assistant that improves with practice.
The pledge was revealed in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the International Telecommunication Union’s Partner2Connect initiative. Partner2Connect is a global programme where companies and governments publicly register commitments to improve digital connectivity and inclusion.
Telkom said the institute will focus on practical, job-ready training. It plans to prioritise young people, small businesses, and communities that are currently underserved in South Africa’s digital economy.
Telkom Group CEO Serame Taukobong framed the move as a next step beyond network buildout. He said connectivity alone is not enough if people cannot turn internet access into skills, jobs, and income.
Telecom operators are under pressure to show value beyond coverage and data pricing. A skills platform like the Telkom AI Institute positions Telkom as a longer-term player in workforce development, which can support demand for its services over time.
It also speaks to a shifting definition of the digital divide. As AI tools spread into customer service, software development, and back office operations, the gap increasingly includes who has the skills to use these tools productively.
For the wider ecosystem, more local training capacity can help startups and SMEs hire talent with relevant AI skills. It can also support public and private sector adoption of AI in ways that are easier to measure, such as employability and small business productivity.
Partner2Connect has now crossed $82 billion in global pledges, according to the ITU, but delivery is the real test. Telkom’s next milestones will likely be timelines, curriculum partners, and how training outcomes will be tracked.
