TAJBank Wins GIFA 2026 Digital Banking Award in UK

TAJBank picked up two major honours at the Global Islamic Finance Awards, also known as GIFA. The bank won the 2026 Championship Award for Digital Banking. Its Founder and Managing Director, Hamid Joda, was named Islamic Banker of the Year 2026.

What Happened

Nigeria’s TAJBank said it received the awards at GIFA’s 16th annual ceremony, held in the United Kingdom.

GIFA recognised Hamid Joda with the Islamic Banker of the Year Award 2026. The organisation also awarded TAJBank the GIFA Championship Award (Digital Banking) 2026.

GIFA Chairman Prof. Humayon Dar said in a message to the bank that the committee reviewed multiple nominees. He said the final decision was based on factors in the “GIFA Methodology,” which is the awards framework GIFA uses to assess nominees.

At the ceremony, the banker of the year award was presented on Joda’s behalf by TAJBank’s Chief Compliance Officer, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Muhammad. Dato’ Iqbal Khan, a GIFA committee member and a former Islamic banking executive, also described the bank’s digital banking award as well deserved.

Joda said the recognition should push a renewed commitment to Islamic banking practices in Nigeria. Islamic banking is banking designed to follow Shari’a rules, including limits on interest and a focus on asset-backed financing.

Awards do not change a bank’s fundamentals, but they can signal credibility. For a newer non-interest bank in Nigeria, global recognition can help with partnerships, talent hiring, and customer trust.

The “digital banking” tag also matters in a market where more customers expect onboarding, transfers, and support to work smoothly on mobile. As Nigerian banking competition tightens, execution on digital channels is becoming a key differentiator, even for specialised lenders like non-interest banks.
